I’m not sure if this simple air resistance is widely used anymore. Could it be that it has been refuted? I doubt it.
The wooden plank would fall down if it were not for the newspaper holding it down. My guess is that if the same newspaper were folded to fit on top of the plank the weight of the paper alone would not have been enough to maintain the balance. In fact, if you hit the plank, as shown, the force of resistance turns out to be rather surprising. All from the air pressure that is affecting the large area of the newspaper.
